WEC 48 RESULTS
Monday, April 26, 2010 Sorry for the delay in the results folks. But here they are. I went 0-3 in picking the main cards. There goes my good record.JOSE ALDO DEFEATS URIJAH FABER by UNANIMOUS DECISION
In the evening's main event former champion Urijah Faber had no answer to Jose Aldo in any area. Aldo dominated the fight using a steady volume of leg kicks and by the second round it was clear that Faber was having trouble even standing. Aldo continued throughout the fight to switch between attacks to the body and leg to confuse Faber.
Starting late in the third round Faber was dropped every time Aldo landed a kick to the thigh. This pattern continued into the fourth round where after Faber was knocked down Aldo went to the ground and put him in a crucifix where he landed a barrage of punches and elbows. The referee chose to allow Faber to continue into the fifth and final round which was the slowest in terms of activity but still one controlled by Aldo.
The final scorecards were 49-45, 49-45 and 50-45. Faber was barely able to stand during the post-fight interviews and was being held up by his coaches.
It was a dominant display by Jose Aldo against one of the best fighters in the history of featherweight MMA and should cement his place as one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
BEN HENDERSON DEFEATS DONALD CERRONE by SUBMISSION
In the first of the evening's two title fights and a rematch of one of the best fights of 2009 Ben Henderson successfully defended his WEC lightweight championship with a dominant first round submission.
It took under two minutes for Henderson to lock Cerrone up. Against the cage with a body lock Henderson was able to land several hard knees to the legs and head before getting a takedown. Not much action happened on the ground until a scramble during which Henderson grabbed Cerrone's neck with a deep guillotine choke. Henderson locked it in and Cerrone had no option but to tap.
The win marks Ben's first defense of his 155 pound crown and his 11th win in a row.
MANNY GAMBURYAN DEFEATS MIKE BROWN by KNOCKOUT
And the biggest upset of the evening in my opinion was in the featherweight division as Manny Gamburyan was able to land a short right hand that dropped former champion Mike Brown. A few hammerfists later and the referee was pulling Manny off of Brown and awarding him the TKO victory.
It was a short fight but Brown looked very hesitant to engage fully and Gamburyan used very nice footwork to pick his spots to try to unload with hard punches. Eventually Brown attempted to step in and flurry but ducked his head down and took his eyes off Gamburyan. Manny landed hard with a short right and as they say "it's the punches you don't see that hurt the most" and Brown was plenty hurt.
The win will send current #8 Gamburyan up the featherweight rankings and #2 Brown will likely tumble.
