UFC 112 RESULTS
Sunday, April 11, 2010
Coming at you live from Abu Dhabi... the worst UFC event ever broadcasted! UFC 112: INVINCIBLE was anything but that. As a mater of fact it will be viewed by this fan as one of the worst events ever brought to us by Zuffa Entertainment. I'll expand on my opinion of the overall event later one, but for now here are the results of the fights with some analysis of the main events.

MAIN EVENT
ANDERSON SILVA defeats DAMIAN MAIA by UNANIMOUS DECISION

Here it is folks. The bust of the night. For those who didn't see the fight I'll explain. Silva came out in his usual wanna-be Muhammed Ali fashion. Taunting and running around the octagon like a capugen monkey looking for a bunch of bananas. Yes, as expected his striking game was just too much for Maia as the champ snaked in jabs and strikes at will during the first two rounds. But then something happened. It was as if Silva got bored at the start of round 3 and pretty much refused to engage Maia in any way. This continued for the next three rounds as the crowd got frustrated and began chanting "Maia" over and over again. The fight went to the judges and they had no choice but to give the fight to Silva. I picked Silva to win, but not in this fashion.

My opinion? Fuck Anderson Silva. He showed zero respect for Maia, the UFC, his fans, and the sport of MMA. I think if the judges had any balls they would have ruled it a No Contest. Hell I honestly think Silva should be stripped of his belt for being such an arrogant asshole. He issued an apology upon the judges decision through his translator, "This will never happen again. I underestimated Maia's strikes. I apologize..." I don't speak Portuguese but if you think that's what he said, your an idiot as well. My translation is this:
I am the greatest and no one should be in the ring with me. Fuck the fans. Let them pay ridiculous amounts to watch me showboat. I'm the luckiest fighter on the planet."

MAIN EVENT
FRANKIE EDGAR defeats BJ PENN by UNANIMOUS DECISION

Did I pick the upset or what? The match wasn't the most exciting to watch but to see the "indestructible" BJ Penn fall to the underdog was something to write home about. Edgar had a clear game plan and stuck with it for the full five rounds and in the end was awarded the Lightweight Championship. Edgar looked like a spastic child on Ritalin as he used superior head movement and change of direction to keep Penn at bay. He picked Penn apart with quick jabs, doing damage to both eyes of the Prodigy. The fight never went to the ground except for two times when Edgar scored a couple of take downs using his collegiate wrestling skills. Did Penn underestimate The Answer? I don't know if anyone can answer that except BJ, but one thing is for sure, the UFC has a new Lightweight Champ for the first time since 2008.

MATT HUGHES defeats RENZO GRACIE via TKO

I was really, really hoping for more from this fight. I even said it was going to go down in UFC history as one of the best ever. Fail! The fight lasted a total of three rounds. I picked Matt Hughes to win. I envisioned the wrestler to overpower Gracies and win using a ground and pound game. I was correct in my forecast but how we got to the ground and pound was a different story. Hughes didn't use his take down skills at all. Instead he dismantled Gracie with an annoying leg kick that eventually caused the Brazilian to fight on one leg basically. It was downhill in the fourth minute of the third and final round when Hughes smelled blood and landed some vicious hands to the face of Renzo, causing a referee stoppage.

Here are the results of the other fights on the card:

Mark Munoz defeated Kendall Grove by TKO in the second round.
Rafael dos Anjos submitted Terry Etim by Submission (arm bar) in the second round.
Phil Davis defeated Alexander Gustafsson via Submission (Choke) in the first round.
Rick Story and Osipzak fought to a Split Decision.
DeMarques Johnson defeated Brad Blackburn via TKO in the third round
Paul Kelly defeated Matt Veach via Submission (choke) in the second round
Jon Madsen defeated Mustafa al Turk via Unanimous Decision

Notes
*Kendall Grove got his ass handed to him after dominating the first round of his fight with Mark Munoz. Munoz has some of the best Ground & Pound in the game
*Submission of the Night went to Rafael dos Anjos as he sunk in a deep arm bar on Tery Etim. In my opinion this was also the fight of the night as both fighters played an intense game of chess throughout the contest.
*The Octagon Girls wore their usual bikinis as earlier rumors stated they will honor Arab custom and cover up.
*I hope the UFC has learned its lesson and choose not to hold anymore outdoor events. Obviously I didn't travel to Abu Dhabi but on PPV the crowd could barely be heard. That could have had an affect on the fighters in my opinion.

Its going to be very interesting to see what, if any, actions are taken by the UFC in reaction to Anderson Silva's antics. His attitude is piss poor and his showboating is getting tiresome. The crowd started chanting "GSP" mixed in with the boos. I have to believe that GSP is going to be the only one to humble this asshole.
